Basic Info

Dagda is a man of few words, and even less thoughts. People sometimes figure he's sagely due to his normally blank expression and calmness, but once they actually hold a full conversation with him, they realize he's just not all there.

He means well, but due to a lack of understanding of societal norms, he can come across as selfish or hurtful, as he did with Absit for many years. He's also very lazy.

  • He doesn't understand societal norms at all, and thus can be taken as being very rude, telling people to do stuff for him. [More under Philosophy.]
  • He enjoys mixing things together, which is why he became a bartender, but outside of people telling him exact orders, he's terrible at mixing drinks, having the worst combinations. He'd probably mix milk and soda, because he'd find the consistency interesting.
  • He's very lazy and often pawns his daughter, Idunn onto Absit to take care of. He is a bad father, but mainly out of ignorance.
    • Part of the reason Idunn is such a menace is surely due to his parenting, though his wife is the opposite: too strict.
  • Absit is his favorite person ever, even more than his wife and daughter. He loves how nice and helpful he always is, though he abuses this kindness without realizing it.
    • He grew his hair out because Absit did while in college, and he wanted to copy him. He was disappointed when Absit cut it.
  • He doesn't like conflict, but his bluntness often causes fights.
  • Despite being a bartender and liking to mix drinks, he doesn't like the taste of alcohol. He does like trying different alcohol combinations, only to dislike it every single time. He's weird.
  • He doesn't particularly like his wife. He just does whatever she tells him to do (including marrying her) because she makes life easy for him, as the breadwinner.

  • Trivia

    • He accidentally got his wife pregnant out of wedlock, which is why they married so young (Dagda 17, Hariette 18).
    • Until Dagda's wedding, Absit figured he hated him, just like the rest of his family. He's surprised when he's invited to the wedding, and his wife, Beatriz, tells him he should design an outfit for him as a gift. He gives him the gift, and only then learns that all this time, Dagda looked up to him. They reconcile and are on decent terms from then on, though Dagda still abuses Absit's kindness, not knowing better.
    • Part of Idunn's love of "experiments" came from him. She'd watch him mix substances together, making her want to try it too.
    • Name Origin:
      • Dagda: Irish god of life and death, druidry, etc. Three sacred treasures: Cauldron of plenty, club of life and death, harp that controls seasons and men. Had many children and lovers. (Source: Mythopedia) While I normally like adding puns or symbolism to names, his was mainly done because Idunn was tied to a Norse goddess, so her father might as well be tied to an Irish one.
  • Him and Lydia are pretty similar with their blunt, emotionless stupidity, and they both have blocky hair. Perhaps I should relate them in some form, but I don't think anything works well. I like Absit, Evelyn, and Dagda being a trio of siblings, and Lydia being Idunn's sister would be odd. So maybe there's no connection.
    • They should at least be friends, if they were to ever meet, though similar to Lydia and Lugubrious, Lydia is mostly just critical of Dagda and his "experiments."

    Philosophy

    "...Hi. Give me $20."

The worst they can say is "No"

Growing up with Absit, who would rarely say "no" to things, Dagda learned that telling people to do stuff for him was basically a cheat code to life that nobody else seemed to be doing. He doesn't understand etiquitte, so he figures there's nothing wrong with telling people to do stuff for him/give stuff to him, because if they don't want to, then they can just say "no." He doesn't know what the big deal is.

He's gotten a lot of free stuff from this "philosophy," though he's also made a lot of enemies. Whoops.

    Hobbies

    Mixing "Potions"

He finds the idea of combining multiple things to make something of a new taste/color/consistency fascinating, so he mixes all sorts of things together, often trying it, and basically never liking the end product, but it's not about the end product: it's about the experiment.

    Sleeping

He likes how his brain makes up stories for him, just like the TV does, except it's not good at following a consistent plot. That's okay; the TV doesn't follow a consistent plot either, constantly introducing new characters and locations (aka, it changed to a different show)

    Visiting Supermarkets

He likes eating the free samples for lunch. And sometimes dinner.

    Playing with Idunn

Only playing, and only when he feels like it. He doesn't want to do any of that "take care of" stuff.

    History

    Main Canon (Earth)

Dagda was born not out of love, but out of revenge for Absit being born to a mistress. He was made as a sign of future faithfullness, by further tying Dagda's mom to his dad, not his mistress.

He grew up quite priviledged, his older sister, Evelyn using him as a tool to further bully Absit. Through this, Absit figured Dagda hated him just like his mother and sister.

In reality, Dagda looked up to his brother for being such a kind, selfless person, even growing his hair out because Absit started doing it in college. But not one for many words, and figuring Absit knew, he never told him. Absit only learned the truth after being invited to Dagda's wedding—after not being invited to his sister's a few years earlier. He was surprised, and, with his wife's goading, he designed Dagda an outfit as a gift, only then learning that all these years, his younger brother looked up to him.

The two are now on relatively good terms, though Dagda still takes advantage of Absit's kindness, to the point his daughter, Idunn, basically lives with Absit.

    Fantasy

Same, except that he actually mixes potions, isntead of just believing he does. He's a white-haired elf, which makes him look even more sagely than human him.

    Iðunn O'Mann (Burdensome Daughter...)

    Dagda

He's pretty neutral on Idunn, "loving" her only becauase he's told he's supposed to; it's not real love, it's just telling himself he does. Overall, he finds her a burden and tends to pawn him off onto others (usually Absit) to take care of her instead.

He does like playing with her sometimes, and is happy that she likes mixing things together too. They bond over that, as well as their mutual dislike of how critical/mean his wife is to both of them.

    Idunn

Idunn finds her dad boring most of the time, except when his wife isn't home and she can get away with more things, because of how passive he is.

    Images

    Absit Oman (Cool Brother...)

    Dagda

Blank-faced idiot who was conceived shortly after Absit, to solidify that the mistress who conceived Absit didn't matter. Dagda always looked up to Absit for being so nice, but due to his niceness, ordered him around constantly. He doesn't consider it taking advantage of him, because otherwise, he'd just say 'no,' right?

    Feelings
    Feelings

    Absit

Dagda orders Absit around, which made Absit thinks he hated him, just like his sister and mother. In reality, Dagda idolized him for being so nice. When Dadga gets married and invites Absit to his wedding, they at least partially make up, Absit learning that Dagda thinks he's 'cool.' That said, the ordering around never stops, Dagda often telling Absit to take care of his rowdy daughter (Absit's niece).

    Images

Evelyn Oman-Ohno (Older Sister who gives me stuff...)

    Dagda

He has some semblance of knowledge that Evelyn is mean, and he doesn't like mean people, but she also gets him free stuff (including from Absit), which tends to overwrite most of his distaste.

Most of the time, he's between being neutral and liking her, but he can dip into disliking her if he gets nothing from her for a bit.

    Feelings
    Feelings

    Evelyn

Evelyn thinks Dagda is super stupid (she's not wrong), but he's not a half-brother like Absit, so she likes him, just as fodder to use against Absit.

She likes how easy it is to manipulate him into further hurting and/or humiliating Absit, without Dagda even realizing he's being mean.

    Images

    harriette Hellinger (Mean Wife...)

    Dagda

He doesn't "like" her as a person; he just likes that she makes his life easy, by earning most of the money and doing the taxes and all that jazz.

They were closer when teenagers and have drifted apart since then, mainly staying together for appearances and "for the sake of the children."

    Hariette

She found him endearing and cute as a teen, but now she finds his unintelligence and laziness annoying. She does keep telling herself it could be worse: he could be abusive, a criminal, or an alcoholic. But as someone with very high standards, she's very unhappy with him.

She scolds him and Idunn constantly, which in turn, gives the two something to bond over: "mom's mean."

She'd have divorced him if not for the shame of divorce and their children. Maybe they will divorce in later life...
