"I'm here to smash heads and and crack jokes, and I'm all out of jokes. ...Just kidding. Having no jokes was a joke." *smashes someone's skull in*

Basic Info

There are only two things Lugubrious loves: conquering and telling jokes. Regrettably, he doesn't understand the latter, but he constantly tries anyway, making out of place jokes on almost every occasion. He is barely capable of emoting (outside of slight smiles, frowns, and lifted eyebrows), thus always looks and sounds incredibly tired and/or bored. Nobody can ever trust this man, not because he's trying to be sleazy, but because he literally will lie 'to be funny,' while being perfectly straight-faced (because that's all he's capable of).

  • Jokes are funny because they're unexpected, right? So he shouts out random words on occasion.
  • Play on words are amusing? Then he'll use puns all the time—without any context as to why he's using them (ex: "That is so a-PAUL-ing" when there is nobody named 'Paul' around).
  • At least with this current 'just a joke character' iteration, he is likely a psychopath, given he has zero remorse for other's well-being. This may change in the future if I flesh him out.
  • He's really stupid (he might be confused why he can't get through a door and not realize it's locked).
  • Very torture/execution-happy, figuring that's a good solution to a lot of problems.

Trivia

  • The fact that he can't emote was likely due to some injury that messed up his brain. Maybe in the past, he actually was funny and he is trying to stay the person he once was, despite being literally incapable of it.
  • He gave himself the name 'Lugubrious Kumquat,' after looking up 'funniest words' and found those as results. His real name is Octavius Melpomene.
  • He is incredibly skilled with using guns, both with speed and accuracy. His brawling capabilities are also quite high. In general, it's best not to fight him.

Philosophy

"...Why didn't you laugh? Is the joke that you didn't laugh?"

Ha ha.

His joke philosophy is anything that he's heard repeated by actual funny people. 'It's funny because it's true.' 'It's funny because it's not true.' 'It's funny because the guy got hurt.' 'It's funny because you expected one thing but they did the opposite.' The problem is he doesn't understand there's a time and a place, so it's always the time and place for all forms of jokes and that just doens't work well.

History

Original Canon

He was the ruler of a musical nation and pretty much a tyrant, killing anyone who didn't laugh at his jokes. His adviser, Picardy III, dealt with this a lot (many times, because Fourth Wall Breaks revived him). Whenever the 'main characters' finally entered Lugubrious' castle, they were going to find a bunch of dismembered Picardies and freak out at how horrifying it was, only for Picardy to appear behind them and tell them how 'actually, he placed my dead corpses here for comedy purposes; you don't expect it, and thus, he thinks it's funny.'

Lugubrious is a very amusing character, but also super one-note, and this exact version of him would be tough to add in a more serious story.

Picardy III (Advisor)

Lugubrious

Lugubrious does trust him as an advisor outside of his jokes, so it'd be best if he just decided 'Picardy doesn't understand comedy' and be done with the abuse.

Picardy III

His poor, poor advisor. Super timid, mainly because Lugubrious keeps injuring him (or killing, depending on the canon) whenever he fails to react properly to his jokes.

Lydia Kadenza (Talented General)

Lugubrious

Lugubrious considers Lydia a kindred spirit, given they're both quite deadpan, and tends to take her criticism of his jokes better than he does most other people. They get along well, normally.

Lydia

Lydia is very dedicated to Lugubrious, both because he's her country's leader and because he likes some of the same shows she likes. She's bluntly critical of everyone, and Lugubrious is no exception, despite his political standing. Thankfully, he's more accepting of her stinging criticism than he is to anyone else, because he relates to her.
