Basic Info
Zane is a sickly, calculative, power-hungry doctor determined to find a way to surpass the limits of his frail body. He's a cynical misanthrope, rarely caring who he hurts to achieve his own ends. He despises emotions, trying to stay deadpan and composed at all times, but his quick temper prevents him from consistently achieving his goals.
- If he respects a person or finds them to be of use, he's quite accommodating. Otherwise, he is grumpy, rude, and reclusive.
- He's a total buzzkill when it comes to humor, often taking things literally. Despite this, he's quite sarcastic himself, but tends to clarify his sarcasm, even when it's obvious.
- He doesn't have a firm grasp on how 'normal' people tend to act, thus may do rather awkward things to try to fit in. He also has a tendency to copy others; if someone pats him on the head, he will pat them back.
- While he's normally not one for unnecessary bloodshed, he is very vengeful and may throw logic to the curb to get his revenge.
- He dislikes breaking laws, but enjoys bending them. (Ex: He would not murder, but if he can talk someone into suicide or get someone else to kill them, that's fine.)
- He is very passionate about biology, especially anatomy. He enjoys slicing dead things open to see how they tick.
- Despite being a doctor, Zane is incapable of casting healing magic, even in canons where he's a master spellcaster.
- This is not due to lack of dedication. He desperately wants the ability, but simply doesn't have any talent for it.
- He is extremely envious of anyone who can magically "fix" people. He spent years of training and dedication to become a doctor, only for someone to magically "fix" people far better than he ever could. He has a big inferiority complex over it.
- Zane's middle name, Eugenius, was chosen by himself as an adult. It, ironically, means 'well born.'
- He speaks flowery English, throwing in Middle English terms on a whim, because he feels it makes him sound more high class.
- Despite his superiority complex, he is oddly alright with poor living conditions, depending on the situation. He'll sometimes sleep on the floor of his office instead of going home, finding it the most logical choice, over wasting his time to return home to a nicer bed.
- He has freckles, but started covering them up with makeup as a teen, as he disliked how they looked. Imperfect!
- He's a bit of a germaphobe, except when it comes to corpses or blood.
- When he doesn't have another willing subject available, he is prone to experimenting on his own body instead.
- He is a bit of a masochist, which stems from his hatred of his "broken" body and his desire to make it suffer.
- If spoken to while sleeping, he has a tendency to sleep talk back, but normally with entirely unrelated answers (like... randomly mentioning muffins).
- He secretly enjoys having his hair stroked. He will often nonchalantly stroke it himself when worried or in thought.
- Hates the sun (burns easily). Also hates the cold (low body fat). Whoops.
- He's a lover of Classical music and is incredibly skilled with the piano. He's far more open about his emotions through music than he'd ever let on elsewhere (outside of anger).
- Due to repurposing an old 'weeb' account into Zane's RP account, 'Crackland' Zane is a huge Love Live fan. He may have a soft spot for rhythm games in canon too.
- In his initial canon, Zane happens upon a strange species of immortal harmless fluffballs who speak nothing but gibberish. Not initially knowing this, he writes '?' in confusion in the sand, only for them to adopt that as his holy symbol. The main reason for their existence is to make him look less threatening when he's grinning maliciously or cackling evilly.
- I relate him to Mars, due to him being born on the planet in one canon. From there, I named two AUs of him off of the planet: Marius and Deimos.
- His Politics, taken November 12, 2025. More Centrist than I tend to play him, because he's a cynic who thinks some things are "wrong," while still supporting them (but on the test, that'd trend him towards seeming against them).

Hobbies
Playing Piano
It puts him at ease, as a 'healthy' means to let his emotions out, without him feeling disgusting.
Chess
He needs an opponent, but when he has a decent one, he finds it a relaxing, yet challenging pastime.
Dissecting Corpses
He's fascinated by finding out how various things 'tick,' and also enjoys honing his incision skills.
Journaling/Note-taking
Writing about his life and findings is a nice way to be 'productive' while also getting to be opinionated.
Studying/Research
Comparing things, theorizing, testing theories... He loves research, even of the most pointless of topics.
Rhythm Games
A guilty pleasure, as an outspoken hater of most 'video games.' He especially liked Love Live. RIP.
Philosophy
"I think quite highly of myself, but not in terms of 'goodness' or 'badness.' Those terms matter not to me. I am a pragmatist; I do what is most logically sound, regardless of the sacrifices one must make to get there. Quite honestly, I wish more were like me, though pious saints do have their place; they make my own job much easier."
Is Evil Really that Bad?
He does not consider himself 'evil,' or at least doesn't consider his type of 'evil' a bad thing. He may be out for himself most of the time, but he also tries to work towards what he believes is the greater good—he simply doesn't care about how many casualties are necessary to get there. 'The Greater Good' to him is the advancement of science and technology, not social issues like poverty and world peace. He may even find world peace to be a bad thing, as lack of conflict may lead to scientific stagnation.
Survival of the Fittest
The strong deserve to survive and the weak are disposable tools. Zane himself requires help constantly, but he rationalizes that he is merely utilizing the weak to his advantage, as any strong person should.
Fair Trade
While he may cheat a 'lesser' being, Zane prefers making deals with people he respects, trading his own talents for theirs. These deals tend to be fair, at least in his eyes, but the moment he believes his services are of greater value than what he is receiving, he will stop exerting effort.
Given how full of himself he is, his 'fair trades' may not feel fair to the other party. To him, sitting around and ordering a brute to do all the manual labor is a fair trade, as Zane's superior intellect is potentially even more important to completing the task than the brute's ability to carry out his orders.
Logic over Emotion
Emotions are the antithesis to logic and perfection, and as such, Zane hopes to one day purge them from his body. Until that happens, he'll blame any faults or hypocrisies he has on 'the curse of being human'. When suffering from any emotions he does not like, he breaks it down from a biological standpoint to detach himself from it; he was not 'emotional;' he was merely suffering from a chemical imbalance. In most stories, he starts out very in control of his emotions, but tends to regress from there, becoming increasingly emotionally unhinged. He does not like this.
History

Generalized Canon
No matter the setting, Zane is born sickly and weak, with a below-average life expectancy. He's obsessed with using what time he does have to the fullest, wishing to gain as much power and prestige as he can. He hates whatever location he's from, considering them "hicks," and puts on a fake "high class" accent to distance himself from his place of birth. He always has an interest in biology and medicine, in hopes of better understanding and controlling his condition, while also having a morbid fascination with death, given he feels so close to it. He tends to become a doctor and/or mortician in most canons.
Earth Canon
Zane is born with Hypermobility (and/or a bunch of other health problems), and initially becomes a surgeon, but has to quit in his early 30s, due to his body deteriorating (his hands are too shaky for such a precise task). Always feeling a morbid connection with death (given he'll likely die young), he becomes a mortician instead. The pessimistic man feels at home with dead bodies, but there's a hidden sadness to it as well. He desperately doesn't want to die, but feels the pull.
Geist: The Sin-Eaters (2024-2025)
In Geist, he does die, to Covid-19 of all things, but is brought back as a Sin-Eater by The Traitor (September). He is elated with his new powers and inability to truly "die" for the time being, but his connection to death grows even stronger and more "at home" while he's like this.

Space Canon (Inanis) (2018-2020)
The small desert planet of Inanis was named for its pointlessness, but a group of freedom-loving individuals decided to branch off from a much larger planet and establish their own government there, sure they could create a new utopia. They failed, requiring lots of pricey shipments from nearby planets just to survive, with minimal natural resources of value to send back. Too prideful to admit defeat, propaganda for Inanis ran rampant in the small colony, especially in schools.
Zane was born a third-generation Inanian, questioning their propaganda at an early age, given their reliance on other planets for supplies. He's desperate to make it off planet, and when he does, he tries his best to hide his Inanian origins, never wanting to look back. In this canon, his anorexia is extra bad, due to growing up on a low-gravity planet. He has his usual stressors, plus he genuinely feels a lot heavier post-Inanis. He's also more physically weak and sickly, due to his upbringing in low gravity.
In a roleplay I was a part of, he joins a space fleet as a doctor and travels the universe, the ship's crew working basically as mercenaries for any planet that needs them. Most of his time was spent on a Monster Hunter inspired planet. He wasn't very good at fighting monsters, and one time caught the Frenzy virus and killed a guy. Deems was also there. In fact, he was there first.

Fantasy Canon (2011-2018)
In his early 20s, his plans are found out and the king banishes him, years of dedication blowing up in his face. Not able to cope with his nobility being stripped away, he begins to overcompensate by dressing more fancily and altering his speech to sound more pompous. While he starts off relatively in control of himself, as he struggles to regain any of the power he once had, he starts to descend further into madness. Given his weight is the one thing he knows he can control, he becomes increasingly obsessed with his food intake. He may have moments of introspection when he realizes he is losing his mind, but this realization only makes him more stressed and hopeless: his mind is all he has left; if he loses that, he has nothing!
Back in the very early days, he was way more campy and ended up failing a coup and washing up on an island inhabited by immortal fluffballs. They spoke gibberish to him and he wrote "?" in the sand, confused. They believed him to be a god, and that symbol to be his holy symbol, thus tThe Order of the ? was formed, with Zane as their leader.
I didn't draw him often, and when I did, it was often tradtional low effort doodles, so there aren't many images from this era.
Anorexia
"If you are referring to my weakened heart and lack of energy, that is because I do not eat as well as humans are meant to. Consider it a curse which has been placed upon me, in which either my mind or my body is meant to suffer. I am allowed to choose which, and I have chosen my body, as I value my mind far more."
While Zane has always cared about his weight, he becomes obsessive about it during his teen years, to the point he's consistently starving himself. Being able to go without food gives him a sense of superiority over others, as he feels this means he has far more self-control. Very little can make this man cry, but weight issues are a very sore spot for him.
- He tends to eat one meal a day, out of obligation. He eats alone, in his room. Some days, he doesn't feel up to eating at all.
- The more stressed he is, the less likely he is to eat.
- He is aware that his lack of food intake is detrimental to his health, but he believes this to be a zero-sum game: fixing his body would absolutely ruin his mind, as eating food causes extreme anxiety. Since his mind is all he has left, he far prefers continuing to starve himself over causing his mind incredible distress.
- Without constant support from someone (don't leave this man alone), he would be a wreck while trying to recover. Paranoia, restlessness, hopelessness, depression, suicidal thoughts, the constant urge to throw up... His attempt to escape his anorexia may just make him even more anorexic.
- In order to trigger an actual desire to recover, he'd have to have a really big health scare, like a heart attack.
- While trying to recover, he is more likely to wear a corset in order to at least pretend his waist is just as slim (or slimmer) than it was before.
- He is also likely to grow his hair out longer and wear it down in order to better hide his figure from the back.
- He is very self-conscious about his waist in general to the point he may exhibit PTSD-like symptoms if someone were to touch it during/after his recovery. He absolutely hates his waist size and tries to ignore it as best as he can, but touching it reminds him of how 'fat' he now is.
