Basic Info

Diethard was a decent father, all things considered, but a move to Germany for a better job ended up hurting his son, Gatlin, who had trouble fitting in, thanks to his thick Italian accent. Gatlin starts resenting him for "not helping enough," and never gets over it.

To this day, Gatlin dislikes his parents—especially Diethard—and casually mocks them, playing it off as just a joke. In reality, his disdain goes so far that he'll often intentionally do the opposite of what they ask, just to get back at them. He's very childish with them.

  • He's not the best at communicating, often coming off as blunt, but he means well.
  • Gatlin is lucky that Diethard isn't vindictive or a gossiper, because he could ruin his son's persona if he went to the press and told them about how Gatlin treats him.

Trivia

  • Diethard: Chosen as a joke because Gatlin is fat and should probably "diet hard." ...Yeah.
  • Born to Austrian parents, Diethard's last name is "Klingmann," despite his son going by "Clingman." Gatlin unofficially changed his name to distance himself from them, after Diethard mentioned that his antics were hurting their family name.

Diethard is a deeply religious man, but more than that, he just likes the sense of community he has with his fellow Catholics. He bakes for the church and also partakes in all sorts of other events.

Reading

He likes a good science fiction novel. Reading puts him at ease, not having any other distractions.

History

Main (Earth)

Diethard grew up in Austria, but later moved to Merano to be with his girlfriend-turned wife. They had their honeymoon in America, and decided to name their son after one of the cities they visited: Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

He enjoyed his life in Northern Italy, but after finding a better job in Germany, they move to Berlin. His son never forgives him for this, having trouble adapting to his new school life. Diethard continues to try to connect with Gatlin, but time and time again, he's shot down, Gatlin's malice only building, if anything.

Basic Info

A kind, but submissive mother of Gatlin Clingman. She loves him and sends him lots of gifts, but tends to side with her husband, Diethard, over Gatlin when there's a disagreement. This leads to Gatlin resenting her.

Trivia

  • Letizia="Gladness," and was the first name of Napoleon's mother. Gatlin sometimes compares himself (half-jokingly) to Napoleon, which is probably why I chose this.
  • "Paoli" is an old Italian silver coin, as well as the last name of a Corsican military leader. Napoleon was Corsican, so maybe it was another minor Napoleon connection.

Gatlin Clingman (Son who Needs to Calm Down)

Gatlin holds a major, mostly unwarranted grudge against his parents. He considers them terrible parents who ruined his dream of becoming a magician, by not helping him better transition to the new culture after they moved countries (Germany or America, depending on the canon). This resentment grows when he gets his groove back and becomes successful, only for them (especially Diethard) to give him pushback.

In reality, they’re just average parents concerned that their son has let his “stardom” get to his head, and he’s at risk of burning up if he doesn’t slow down. They’re not wrong, given his overindulging in food and alcohol and the amount of scandals he’s already gotten into. They worry for both his physical and mental health, but Gatlin will have none of it, telling them off whenever they bring it up.

His treatment of them is far different than how he acts with anyone else, being much more immature and spiteful, often doing things they tell him not to do, just to rebel, like an unruly teen. He's very childish with them. He'd never want that part of him being known to the public.

Diethard

Diethard is not the best with his words, his attempts at nudging Gatlin a specific way not being too subtle, but he means well.

Feelings
Feelings

Gatlin

Diethard is one of Gatlin's least favorite people, all because Gatlin blames him for "messing up his life," though moving to Germany. Gatlin's life has improved greatly from there, but he still holds the grudge.

He will actively go against whatever Diethard offers he do, just to pettily get back at him. He doesn't treat anyone else with such disdain.

Gatlin Clingman (I Wish he Liked me More...)

Letizia

Letizia dotes on Gatlin, but Diethard's views take precedent, leading her to usually siding with Diethard, much to Gatlin's chagrin. She does often send him gifts, which he tends to throw out or give to someone else.

Feelings
Feelings

Gatlin

Gatlin would like Letizia well enough, if she discarded Diethard, but she doesn't, so he groups her in with her husband. Not a fan, but he'd pick her over his dad any day. At least she tries to be nice. (He's biased; Diethard tries to be nice too; he just fails.)
